In last couple of years, HIV awareness campaigns have continued to increase in Nigeria and many people are becoming more and more enlightened about the disease as well as how to avoid it.

But as much as various people and organisations continue to shed light on this deadly virus, not much is being said about other equally fatal diseases that can as well be contracted through sexual intercourse.

As a result, nearly everyone is on the lookout for HIV, not knowing that there are other dangerous viral diseases out there as well.
Read on to find out about 2 sexually transmitted diseases that are as deadly as HIV.

1. Herpes: Herpes is a viral infection caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). This virus usually affects the external genitalia, anal region and skin on other parts of the body. This disease is a long-term condition, and symptoms include; pain when urinating, ulcers or blisters on external genitalia or in the vagina, vaginal discharge and cold sores. Herpes can be passed from person to person through having unprotected vaginal or oral sex, sharing sex toys, having oral sex with a person who has cold sores or blisters and having genital contact with an infected person. There is no cure for herpes, but it can be treated with medications and some home remedies.

2. Hepatitis B: The Hepatitis B virus is a DNA virus that belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family of viruses. It is however not related to hepatitis A virus or hepatitis C virus. Many people living with the hepatitis B virus usually appear healthy but they can spread the virus to others. This virus is transmitted through sexual intercourse or through contact with contaminated blood (such as sharing needles when using intravenous or illicit drugs with an infected person), and from mother to child (during childbirth). Chronic hepatitis B infection progresses slowly over a long period of time and may be undetected for many years. This disease can be treated with antiviral drugs but the medication does not cure the infection.
