The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) kept its schedule in the recall process initiated by electorates in Kogi West Senatorial District against Senator Dino Melaye.

On Saturday the electoral body held the authentication of signatures of votes seeking the recall of the 'video music superstar-Senator'.

But the exercise witnessed a low turn out in most parts of Lokoja, the capital of the state.

Most of the polling units were empty, with some people claiming that they were not aware of the exercise, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

At most polling units in Ward 1 of Odo Egbe, INEC officials said less than 20 voters had shown interest in the exercise.

Many people were not interested in the recall process, they said, indicating that the Senator may be gaining upper hand in the process happening at a time that he has experienced series of circumstances that landed him on a hospital bed.

A voter, Miss Felicia Adebayo, said she was at the post for the verification exercise because she was told that money was being shared at the polling units.

“I am told that money is being shared to those that come; I need the money because we have not been paid salary for a while,” she said.

Other persons at verification exercise centres were not ready to react to Adebayo's claim. An INEC official, who wanted to remain anonymous said that there was general apathy to the exercise.

“Very few people have shown interest in the exercise; we have been waiting for people to come out but very few seem to know what we are doing here,” he said.

The situation of things leaves one with questions like; where are the people that initiated the recall?

Senator Melaye is troubled on every side.

On one side is an arrest initiated by the police on Tuesday that resulted in the Senator being hospitalised.

He had jumped from the window of a police vehicle after he was arrested at his residence and that resulted in him being hospitalised.

He is in the intensive care unit of the National Hospital, Abuja.

On the other hand is his recall process that is ongoing in Kogi claimed to have been initiated by electorates from his district.

But the process appears to have suffered a setback.

The Senator had said it was politically motivated.
