Its June 16 again! The day we get to celebrate the life and genius of the living legend of Afrobeat, Femi Kuti who clocks 55 today.

He was born on June 16, 1962 to the great Fela Anikulapo Kuti and his first wife, Remilekun Kuti (Nee Taylor).

Femi's musical career started when he began playing in his father's Egypt 80 band.

He started his own band, Positive Force, in 1986, and began establishing himself as an artiste independent of his father's massive legacy.

He has since recorded six studio albums plus two live albums and has been nominated for the Grammy Awards four times in the world music category in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2013 but has never won.

Femi Kuti is internationally recognized not only for his songs but also for his activism and fight for human rights. He has collaborated with international artistes like Common, Mos Def, Macy Gray, etc.

Recently, on May 15, 2017 Femi Anikulapo Kuti broke the Guinness world record of a single note held on a sax in a method called circular breathing.

He set the record at 51 minutes 35 seconds in an historic performance live at his New Africa Shrine.

It might just be the best night to hang out at the New African Shrine. After all its #TGIF!

But if you can’t worship at the Shrine, have some Femi classic to start your weekend. Arararara…
