Gunmen have abducted 18 passengers in Rivers State when they hijacked a commercial bus.

The incident occurred around 5:38 a.m on Friday in Omurelu-Elele axis on Owerri-Port Harcourt road in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

Bounce News gathered that the 18-seater bus was traveling from Owerri, in Imo State to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, when they were ambushed by the armed suspected kidnappers.

According to an eyewitness account, the attackers blocked the highway with woods and shot sporadically into the air before abducting the victims including the driver of the bus.

The eyewitness further disclosed that the armed bandits moved the victims to an unknown destination at gunpoint.

The Commander of the IGP Monitoring Unit in Rivers State, Ben Igwe who confirmed the development said the incident happened in the early hours of Friday.

“The incident happened and we are aware of it. Myself and my team are on top of the situation,” Igwe said

Igwe, who is the Deputy Commissioner of Police, assured that efforts were underway to rescue the kidnapped victims unhurt, as his team is leading the operation.

The gunmen have not established contact with the victims’ relations, at the time of filing in this report.
