They refused to allow the dead to rest in peace. Over a dozen of them stormed the venue with their faces covered in cloth masks.

The gunmen, who are suspected to be cultists, shot sporadically into at the guests killing seven people while several others sustained injuries.

The incident happened on Saturday at Ihuaje community in Ahaoda-East Local government area of the state.

Spokesperson of the Police Command in Port Harcourt, Nnamdi Omoni confirmed the incident saying investigation has begun to find the attackers.

“The gunmen arrived at the ceremony and shot sporadically at their targets but others were killed by stray bullets.

“We believe it was a cult attack even though we are still investigating.

“Our men have been deployed to restore calm in the area,” he said.

A source says the family burying their dead may belong to a rival cult gang and their 'unwanted' presence in the area may have caused the attack.
