Illicit drug users now known as 'Science Students' are in trouble in Kano State. The state government has drawn battle axe.

The Kano State government is increasing efforts to choke rising cases of drug abuse in Kano State which has become a source of concern even for Nigerian lawmakers.

At least one million bottles of codeine are taken on a daily basis in the state and the state and this is just codeine. Other illicit drugs are also in use. 

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State wants speedy trial and long jail term for drug peddlers in the country.

He believes this will help his administration’s efforts at fighting drug abuse.

One of his latest efforts came on Friday when he destroyed illicit drugs worth 1 billion Naira intercepted at various places within Kano city by the state Task Force on Drugs.

After setting the drugs ablaze at the NDLEA premises in Kano, Governor Ganduje said the exercise was a breakthrough in the administration’s war against sale and consumption of illicit drugs in the state.

The governor said that the state government had recently expanded the rehabilitation centre for victims of drug abuse in the state.

He urged groups and individuals in the state to support the government’s efforts in fighting drug abuse to ensure a decent society.

Commandant of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Malam Hamza Umar, witnessed the exercise.

He restated the determination of the agency to make the state free of dangerous drugs.
