Arsenal suffered their first defeat after just two games in the new English Premier League season on Saturday.

It was a slim 1-0 loss to Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

After a barren first half, Jese Rodriguez, who joined Mark Hughes' side from Paris St-Germain on Wednesday, slid in from a tight angle after being left unmarked to pick up Saido Berahino's pass just 90 seconds into the second half.

Wenger was frustrated by the poor defense and inability of his side to equalize.

"It was frustrating getting caught cold for the goal. Defensively there is no excuse. We gave them a cheap goal.

"We knew it was important not to make a defensive mistake. But we came out straight after half-time, were too sluggish and paid for it.

"We gave them too much freedom in the middle. I was not convinced by our central defence today."

"It's a difficult defeat to swallow. We had chances. We should have won the game comfortably."
