Former President Jonathan’s Doctor Charged With Money Laundering
Former President Goodlcuk Jonathan’s doctor, Fortunate Fiberesima was alleged to have abused his position as the Chief Physician to the President in 2012 by awarding contracts to a company where he has interests.
Fiberesima was a former Chief Executive Officer of State House Medical Centre in Abuja.
He was slammed with a six-count charge of money laundering by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.
Fiberesima was arraigned on Tuesday before Justice Peter. O. Affen of the Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Maitama, Abuja.
EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren stated this in a press release issued by the Commission on Tuesday.
Specifically, the EFCC is accusing him of having an interest in a contract for land reclamation at the state house medical centre, Abuja in the sum of 258 million Naira, and awarded to T. E & C Limited, a company which Fiberesima allegedly served as director.
This, according to EFCC, was an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 12 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
Fiberesima’s lawyer, U. B. Eyo, begged the court to grant his client bail on liberal terms. He added that the accused has no previous criminal record and he would always be available for trial.
Y. Y. Tarfa, counsel to EFCC, did not oppose the bail application.
Justice Affen ordered that the defendant should continue the bail condition earlier granted him by the EFCC, but added that the defendant should submit his international passport to the court registrar.
The case has been adjourned till 6 June for commencement of trial.
