After playing for Manchester United and the England national team, Rio Ferdinand is switching lanes to boxing.

The 38-year-old’s move is linked with a betting company who are popular for stunts.

Ferdinand will be trained by former WBC super-middleweight champion Richie Woodhall.

The former defender tweeted on Tuesday, saying he can’t wait to get started.

“It's happening... Can’t wait to get started with the team @betfair have put together, @richiewoodhall and @meldeane ?? #DefenderToContender”

Ferdinand played for Manchester United between 2002 and 2014, making 312 appearances and scoring seven goals.
