From low traffic junctions to practically any open space to viewing centres and newspaper stands - Nigerian play, watch and talk football in all 36 states of the federation.

The successes and failures recorded by Nigerian national teams are part of our nation and national treasures.

These were the assertions of the FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, who has described Nigeria as a country with unquantifiable passion and love for football.

In Nigeria, football is more than a religion.

He made these remarks during the inaugural AITEO/NFF Awards where he received the Platinum Award.

“I was told that in Nigeria football is passion, but it is a lie because it is more than that. In Nigeria I was told that football is love, but it is a lie it is more than that.

“In Nigeria, I was told that football is a religion, but it is a lie. It is more than that. In Nigeria, football is life,” The FIFA boss said in Lagos on Monday.

It is on record that Monday's award ceremony is the first of its kind where the FIFA President and CAF President were both in attendance.
