Residents of Eyinala area of Akure in Ondo state appear to have struck a date with tragedy.

The community woke up on Saturday morning to witness the devastating sight of flood impact resulting from the heavy downpour that ravaged the city on Friday night.

An unidentified middle-aged man was said to have been drowned in a river which was overflown by the flood.

According to a resident of the area, Mrs Latifat Ibrahim, the man whose corpse was discovered on Saturday morning attempted to assist a woman who was trying to cross a flooded bridge with her two children.

"The man met his untimely death while lending a helping hand to a woman who was trying to cross a flooded bridge at Ologede, Eyinala Ayedun area of Akure around 8.30pm on Friday."

Efforts to rescue him, according to Mrs Ibrahim, proved abortive until his lifeless body was found the following morning.

Secretary, Landlord Association of Eyinala, Mr Oladele Ijalana said the flood is an annual thing, adding that many landlords and tenants had relocated to other areas of the community.

They called on Ondo state government to come to their aid by channeling the river in the area.

The Police image maker of the Ondo State Command, Mr Femi Joseph who confirmed that the deceased had been deposited into the mortuary of the state hospital, said the police had commenced an investigation into the matter.

Worried by the development, the state commissioner for environment, Mr Funso Esan in a visit to the affected area, promised that government would look into the challenge.
