A solitary goal from Cristiano Ronaldo was enough for Portugal to see off Russia in Wednesday's Confederations Cup encounter.

The Real Madrid star found the net after eight minutes, beating goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev with a strong header from close range, and Stanislav Cherchesov's side were unable to find a response.

Ronaldo tried his luck again on the 25th minute but Akinfeev was on hand to stop the World Best football player from increasing his tally for the day.

Hard as Russia tried to get an equaliser and Portugal to increase their tally, there were no more goals from Wednesday's encounter.

The result meant that Portugal have moved to top  spot in Group A and are now on the verge of a semi-final spot, while tournament hosts, Russia need to beat Mexico in their final group match to reach the semis.
