Portugal on Sunday claimed the third spot in the FIFA Confederation Cup without Cristiano Ronaldo.

The European champions will admit they needed a little bit of luck to get past their Mexican opponents who they beat 2-1 after extra time.

Portugal’s Andre Silva missed a penalty and Luis Neto conceded an own goal early in the second half in what was looking like a day that would not favour the European champions.

The tables, however, turned as Pepe scored in second-half stoppage time and Adrien Silva converted the winner in extra time.

Both teams were reduced to 10 men following the expulsion of Nelson Semedo and Raul Jimenez.

Sunday's outing was a happy ending for Portugal who had to play without their inspirational captain Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Real Madrid star, who wants out, was granted leave to see his newly born twins after the semi final loss to Chile.
