The rumour that spread like wide fire on Friday night became true after all. 

It became the talk of town that the election would be postponed and those who had kept vigil for the night before the election could tell how fast this news permeated the entire media space. 

While the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission met, people were expecting a postponement. 

At about 2:40 a.m., the cat was let out of the bag. 

'Based on Logistics', the election was shifted. 

The postponement by one week was announced by the chairman of INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

Here is the speech that turned things up-side-down for Nigerians that had travelled from one state to another, observers in the land already and the media that had sent personnel to different parts of Nigeria.  

"Ladies and Gentlemen,

"The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) met on Friday, 15th February 2019 and reviewed its preparations for the 2019 general elections scheduled for Saturday, 16th February 2019 and Saturday, 2nd March 2019.

"Following a careful review of the implementation of its logistics and operational plan, and the determination conduct free, fair and credible elections, the commission came to the conclusion that proceeding with the election as scheduled is no longer feasible.

INEC announces postponement of general elections

"Consequently, the commission has decided to reschedule the presidential and National Assembly elections to Saturday, 23rd February 2019.

"Furthermore, the governorship, State House of Assembly and Federal Capital Territory area council elections are rescheduled to Saturday 9th March 2019.

"This will afford the commission the opportunity to address identified challenges in order to maintain the quality of our elections.

"This was a difficult decision for the commission to take, but necessary for the successful delivery of elections and consolidation of our democracy.

"The commission will meet with our key stakeholders to update them on this development at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, 16 February 2019, at the Abuja International Conference Centre.

"Thank you very much."
