There has been a gas explosion scare in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, following the crash of a truck laden with liquid gas, in Asero community.

The truck crashed into a row of shops besides the Muda Lawal stadium, opposite a filling station, around 1am on Wednesday.

The incident, which occurred while people in the area were still on their beds, caused panic when they woke up and learnt of the crash in the morning.

People in the area were cautioned not to lit their stoves to avoid explosion from lingering scent of gas.

Rescue workers, fire fighters from the federal and Ogun state fire service, as well as officials of the state emergency management agency, and security agencies, douse the huge gas cylinder with water, to reduce the heat, in case of likely explosion.

It took more than 13 hours before the truck could be evacuated safely from the scene.

The incident caused traffic jam, as the Aladesanmi and Mountain of Fire axis of Asero-Obantoko road was cordoned off.
