Former England captain, Wayne Rooney put himself forward as one of the star acts in the opening weekend of the Premier League as his solitary strike gave Everton victory over Stoke City on Saturday.

After 13 record-breaking years away at Manchester United, the 31-year-old made the ideal mark on his Premier League homecoming with a sumptuous strike that saw Everton starting the season on a winning note .

Rooney's header late in the first half - his first competitive goal on his return to his boyhood club- broke the deadlock and set Ronald Koeman's Everton on course for a 1-0 win at Goodison Park.

The win recorded by Everton on Saturday was indeed a nervy one and they would have Rooney to thank for delivering the masterclass goal that provided maximum three points.
