Riyad Mahrez missed a late penalty as Liverpool and Manchester City labored to a goalless draw in an English Premier League tie played at Anfield on Sunday.

There was so much hype ahead of the game, but the encounter did not live up to its expectation.

There was an early call for penalty by City players and bench when Aguero was argued to have been brought down inside the danger area, but the ref refused to bend to pressure as he insisted there was no offensive contact.

However, there was late drama when Virgil van Dijk brought down Leroy Sane with a few minutes left on the clock.

Algeria international Mahrez fired wide the resulting spot kick over the bar, but City will still go into the international break on top of the Premier League table.

Liverpool has now gone down to 3rd spot as Chelsea moved to 2nd with superior goal difference after beating Southampton 3-0.
