Leroy Sane's late goal gave on Thursday gave Manchester City a crucial 2-1 victory over Liverpool and also helped them close the gap on the Premier League leaders to four points.

It was Sergio Aguero who broke the deadlock five minutes before half-time when he fired a brilliant half-volley past Alisson.

But Roberto Firmino's header got the Reds back in it before Sane struck a superb goal on 71 minutes to seal all three points for Pep Guardiola's team and effectively ended Liverpool's unbeaten run in the league.

This was billed as the biggest game of the season and in terms of atmosphere, it delivered.

From the start, the home support got behind their team in a way never seen before as the game quickly developed into a high-octane clash.

With the win, City have moved back into second place above Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues take a rest from Premier League action and turn attention to domestic cup competition with an FA Cup tie against Rotherham on Sunday and the Carabao  Cup semi-final, first leg against Burton next Wednesday..
