A former teammate of Nigerian striker, Emmanuel Emenike has been arrested in Turkey.

CNN Turk reports that Bekir Irtegun, who played along with Emenike at Fenerbahce for almost two years, was detained after being arrested by Turkish authorities.

The detention of the former Turkey national team soccer player is part of the sweeping crackdown following the July 15, 2016 failed coup attempt.

It is been said that Irtegun was a sympathiser of U.S.-based cleric, Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara blames for orchestrating the failed coup.

The footballer was detained by police for allegedly using ByLock, an encrypted messaging app the government says was used by Gulen’s network, which the government calls FETO and considers a terrorist organisation, CNN Turk said.
