They say all is fair in love and war, but Governor Ayo Fayose may have missed the memo that there are electoral laws even if the ongoing Ekiti governorship election has been a war.

As the results trickled in on Saturday, Governor Ayodele Fayose thought the smartest thing to do was to announce results in favour of his deputy and candidate of the PDP, Kolapo Olusola, and declare him the winner of the governorship election in the state.

So, he jumped on the state-owned Ekiti Broadcast Service to do that and helped the station to breach the Electoral Act and Broadcasting Code.

Implication? The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) ordered the immediate closure of the Ekiti Broadcast Service for breaching provisions of the Broadcasting Code.

Asides the unauthorised declaration of election results by the governor, the Commission also accused Mr Fayose of using the broadcast service to make malicious and unsubstantiated comments against the Independent Electoral Commission (INEC), the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services.

The Commission noted that Ekiti Broadcast Service is to remain shut until further notice as broadcasters were warned against such illegalities before the election.

As the 2019 elections get closer, the NBC had called on broadcasters in the country to adhere to the ethics of election coverage.
