After just five matches in charge of relegation-threatened Nigeria Professional Football League side, Sunshine Stars FC, Coach, Austin Eguavoen has threw in the towel.

There was so much fanfare with the coming of the former Super Eagles Coach to handle the Akure Gunners but what many thought will be a rewarding journey is over.

Debates on whether Eguavoen has the magic wand to save Sunshine Stars from going down popped up after his team were beaten 2-1 at home by Plateau United last Wednesday.

There was no soft landing for Eguavoen in his next outing away in Ibadan where Sunshine lost by a lone goal to an equally relegation threatened team and the rest is now history.

Already, Sunshine Stars have confirmed that they have parted ways with Eguavoen who has previously handled other teams including Enyimba, COD United, and Gombe United.

A statement from the club through its media officer Chris Okunnuwa read: “The Management of Sunshine Stars FC has received and accepted the disengagement notice of Coach Austin Eguavoen.

"The Club appreciates the coach for his time with the club and wishes him the best for the future.

"In view of this development, Sunshine Stars FC Management has appointed the club former assistant coach, Akin Olowookere as the Interim Head Coach.

"The former junior international will be assisted by coach Ogunderu Boye".

“The appointment takes immediate effect”

It was gathered in some quarters that Eguavoen chose to step down from his position because he was unhappy with the working conditions at the Ondo State owned club.
