DUBIOUS PENALTY: Raheem Sterling Apologizes, Admits No Contact
Manchester City trashed Shakhtar Donetsk 6-0 in the Champions League on Wednesday but the performance was overshadowed by a dubious moment in the match.
The Sky Blues were leading 1-0 in the game when Raheem Sterling was sent through on goal and he went tumbling in the box after kicking the turf instead of the ball.
Defender Mykola Matviyenko and the rest of the Shakhtar team were left horrified when referee Viktor Kassai pointed to the spot, penalty!
Absolutely ridiculous and since Sterling already built some reputation for his trickery, Twitter and the rest of the media turned on him.
But he shut everyone after the game with his honesty.
"I went to chip the ball and I don't know what happened next," he told BT Sport. "I ended up on the floor and turned around...
"I don't think I felt contact, it was my bad. I hit the floor, scuffed the floor, so apologies to the ref and apologies to Shakhtar."
Although, the apology changes nothing, it must be said that Sterling did not dive or call for a penalty. Guardiola even told the fourth official his player fell over.
