Most people associate domestic violence with men beating women. However, a new statistics proves that this is not always the case.

The statistics released by the Lagos State government showed that more housewives are battering their husbands.

According to the report released by the Lagos State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem, no fewer than 138 of such cases were reported to the agency in charge of domestic violence in the last one year.

According to him: “The Ministry has noted an increase in report of domestic abuse against men. To date, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) has received a total number of 138 cases in this regard."

The figure is 83 more than what was recorded in 2017 and 124 more than the 2016 figure.

However, this doesn’t mean women in Lagos do not suffer physical violence on a large scale.

In fact, in the report a total number of 1,771 cases were reported during the period under review while violence against women increased to 1633.

Speaking on the report, a lawyer, Hamid Omikunle told Bounce News that domestic abuse is no respecter of gender or status.

He said gender-based violence was on the increase not only against women and the children, but also directed on men – who are being beaten up by their wives.

He noted that in extreme circumstances, women go to the extent of pouring hot water on their husbands.

He added that most men who are victims of domestic violence apply for divorce in the court.
