Customs Seizes 1,100 Illegal Firearms At Lagos Port

Officials of the Nigeria Custom Service at Tin-Can Island Port in Lagos have impounded 1,100 pump action rifles.
The weapons are said to have originated from Turkey and were concealed inside a container with its Bill of Laden indicating wash hand basins.
The weapons were discovered by custom officers who were carrying out 100 percent examination of the container that brought the consignment .
The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Custom Service, Col. Hameed Ali (Rtd) who confirmed the seizure said that the weapons were hidden in a 1×20 ft container.
A customs officer and a clerk at the Tin-Can Island command who are suspects have been arrested.
The seizure brings the number of pump action rifles impounded by customs to 2,110.
On May 23, the customs announced the seizure of a cache of arms – 440 rifles – imported from Turkey in Lagos.
In January, the service also disclosed that it seized 661 firearms on Apapa road, which were in a truck headed for an unknown destination.
