In a country where cases of corruption running into billions of naira have led to the death of many citizens and most perpetrators are walking free, it would be right to call this court judgment bizarre.

Alaba Akinola (30), Sarafa Babalola (25), Sola Kolawole (27), and Ibrahim Gbedeogun (28) will be put to death over a 10,000 Naira phone.

They were arraigned before an Oyo State High Court sitting at Iyaganku, Ibadan for armed robbery.

The state counsel, Mr I. O Mojoyinola, said they robbed their victim of a cell phone valued at 10,000 Naira.

He said that they committed the crime at Ayekale, Ibadan on October 16, 2011, at about 4.30 a.m. with guns and cutlasses.

Justice Rayo Taiwo on Friday sentenced all four men to death for the crime.

The offence contravened section 1 (2) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act, Cap. RII Vol.14 Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.

The law is clear on robbery but one would wonder if at their level, they are beyond rehabilitation.
