The suspects had kidnapped and attempted to assassinate Monday Okey, CEO of Monablis Hotel and Suites.

They were arrested by the police in Enugu and Anambra States after a fierce fight, and thereafter charged to court.

A Magistrate Court sitting in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, has remanded in prison the suspected five-man gang.

The business man, Monday Okeh is the Chief Executive Officer of Monablis Hotel and Suites, Nnorom Street, Abakaliki.

The kidnap gang, which includes a final year female student of Ebonyi State University, EBSU, were arraigned before a Magistrate Court presided over by Ogoke Stella on seven count charges of conspiracy, unlawful kidnap, armed robbery, attempted murder and belonging to a secret cult.

They thereby committed offences punishable under section 516A(a), 402, 320 of criminal code cap 33 vol 1 laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, offence contrary to section 3(1) (3) and 4(1) punishable under section 5 of Ebonyi State law prohibiting secret cult activities and carrying of offensive weapons in Ebonyi State of Nigeria 2009 and section 4(1)(a) and punishable under section(4)(2) of Ebonyi State Internal Security enforcement and related matters law cap 55 vol. 2 law of Ebonyi State of Nigeria.

The suspects include: Ikpeucha Chinonso, Desmond Uguru Ikechukwu, Loveth Okpara Nnenna, Nnaemeka Nwinya and Emeka Igwe.

During the trial, Uchenna Daniel Mpiatu Esq appeared for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th accused persons, while David Ifeanyi Nwankwo Esq stood for the 4th accused.

The defense counsels appealed for bail of their clients. They argued that the suspects remain innocent until proved otherwise by court of competent jurisdiction.

Their appeal were not granted because of the degree of the offences which were beyond the jurisdiction of a Magistrate Court, therefore, the suspects were remanded in prison custody.

The Chief Magistrate also ordered all documents and evidences in the matter to be forwarded to the Department of Public Prosecution.

The matter was adjourned to the 7th day of August 2018 for hearing.
