Constituency Members React To Ondo Deputy Speaker's Impeachment
Constituency members of impeached Deputy Speaker of Ondo state House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Ogundeji Iroju, are speaking out.
In what appears to have been a scripted play on stage in the Ondo state House of Assembly on Tuesday, Iroju was impeached by 18 of 26 lawmakers.
His offence is connected to the rift that built a wall between him and Speaker of the house, Bamidele Oleyeloogun.
Hon. Fatai Olotu, who represents Akoko North East State Constituency, moved the motion for his impeachment.
Citing his reason, Olotu said frosty relationship between the Speaker and his Deputy was not in the interest of the House.
Reacting to his impeachment, members of his constituency in Ile-Oluji /Oke Igbo state constituency said the lawmaker is being haunted.
One of the constituency members, Aderemi Owolafe said:
"It is a political witch-hunt. If there is a disagreement between him and the speaker, why can’t they settle it amicably? Is beheading an antidote to headache? It is obvious there are more powerful people behind this drama."
Another member, Abiodun Akinfolayan said it is politically motivated.
"If you could remember, Hon. Iroju played a prominent role in the impeachment of the former speaker, Jumoke Akindele. So what they are trying to do now is to reduce his power and influence in the house.
"They know if he remains powerful, he can also orchestrate the impeachment of the current speaker and automatically become the speaker of the house.
"Forget about the misunderstanding between them. It is a planned work by those who are loyal to the speaker."
However,a lawmaker who represents Idanre constituency, Tuyi Akintimehin believes it is an attempt to unite factions in the house.
"What kind of representation do you expect from us when there is a leadership crisis in the house? Things can only go right when there is perfect synergy between the speaker and his deputy. For us and the good people of Ondo state, it is the best decision so far."
The embattled lawmaker was the leader of the group that plotted the impeachment of Mrs. Akindele shortly after the emergence of Governor Rotimi Akeredolu.
He has been replaced by Hon. Abimbola Fajolu, representing Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo constituency.
