Akoko roads in North senatorial district of Ondo state have become a death trap.

Traveling along the roads is a nightmare while accidents have become a regular occurrence.

On Wednesday, at least three people reportedly died while five others were critically injured in a ghastly crash that involved a loaded timber lorry, a truck and two other vehicles on Ikare-Arigidi Road.

The accident, according to an eyewitness account, was caused by bad roads and disregard for speed limit.

"The timber lorry which was fully loaded with timber veered off its lane while the driver was trying to avoid potholes and rammed into the Hilux and two other vehicles at the opposite direction", the source said.

However, one of the community leaders in Arigidi Akoko, James Ipinmola said if the roads were to be in good shape, there wouldn't be road accident repeatedly.

"Everything still boils down to bad roads. It is obvious we cannot caution the drivers not to speed on the road. It is their traditions to speed but if the roads are good, they can only speed themselves to death without affecting other road users.

"Imagine those innocent lives that are wasted. If the driver had remained in his lane, the worst that could happen was to run into the bush in his lane. And until our government finds solution to all these roads, we will continue to experience this kind of incident."

Another resident Biodun Oyelakin also pleaded to governor Akeredolu to do something on the roads.

"We are not begging the governor to dualize our roads. What we are begging him for is just to rehabilitate the bad portions of the roads so that everybody can ply the routes with peace of mind especially, those who travel to the north."

Divisional Police Officer in charge of Okeagbe-Akoko, Adetarami Ibitayo confirmed that the deceased have been deposited at the General hospital while the injured are receiving treatment.
