Commonwealth Games: Nigerian Athletes To Get N1.8m For Gold Medal
Team Nigeria athletes have been promised $5,000 (about N1.8m) for each Gold medal they win at the Commonwealth Games set to begin in Gold Coast, Australia.
Silver medalist have been promised $3,000 while bronze medalists will get $2,000 as officials try to encourage athletes to go the extra mile to win laurels for the country.
The Minister for Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung said he hopes Team Nigeria will exceed its previous performance.
"In this Games, Nigerians are expecting nothing short of surpassing their record in the last games." He stated.
Addressing the athletes immediately after the welcome ceremony, the Minister asked them to compete fairly without tarnishing the image of the country. Be good ambassadors of the country as much is expected from whom much is given, he told them.
"I see you are all in high spirit and it shows that you have prepared for the competition. The President, the father of the nation has sent his special greetings and to inspire Team Nigeria.
"It is the President's wish, that at the end of our sojourn here, the name of Nigeria will be great.
"Mr President also said that he will be very happy to receive clean medals even if they're of the lowest cadre than ten tainted medals.
The opening ceremony of the XXI Commonwealth Games holds on April 4, 2018 at the Carrara stadium Gold Coast from 7:00 p.m.
