The first batch of Team Nigeria Athletes for the 2018 Commonwealth Games have arrived in Gold Coast, Australia.

The first batch of athletes and coaches are from Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, Para Power lifting, Para Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Para Athletics, and Weightlifting; totaling 56 athletes and 22 coaches.

The team traveled aboard an Emirate Airline en-route Dubai from the Nnamdi Azikwe Airport in Abuja on Saturday.

It is understood that the second batch will leave the country on April 2nd and the traveling contingent will consist of athletes and coaches from Wrestling and Athletics Federations which has the highest number of athletes on its roster.

Nigeria would participate in 10 sports at the games scheduled for April 4 to April 15.

Tayo Oreweme, Director, Federation and Elite Athletes Department (FEAD) at the Ministry of Sports charged the athletes to do well at the Games in Australia.

She said: “our expectation is nothing but ‘go to Gold Coast and bring all the available gold medals’.

“There is no pressure on the athletes, they will do their best and their best will be good enough for the country.

“They have been in camp for 100 days, by the grace of God, Nigeria will come back gloriously from the Games,” she concluded.
