Commissioner Calls For Periodic Retraining Of Teachers
The Enugu State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Uche Eze says periodic training of teachers is the best way to improve the development of basic education in the state.
The Commissioner made the call on Thursday in Enugu.
He harped on the need to expose teachers to various workshops and seminars that would enhance their skills.
For him, teachers should be sent to Nigeria Teachers Institute for re-training to build their knowledge and skills in conformity with modern day reality.
He said that rewards are very crucial to the teachers in other to enhance their efficiency, boost their morale and enthrone competition among them.
“It is widely said that any system without reward will not bring out the best among the manpower that make up the system.
“Government should pay keen attention in rewarding teachers, as this will encourage them in impacting knowledge to our children.
“The issue of welfare of teachers especially those in basic education can never be overemphasized.
“Government should make their salaries and allowances a priority so as to avoid incessant industrial action that characterise education system in Nigeria.
“There is also need to ensure that those that are due for promotion are promoted immediately without delay,” he said.
He said that one of the greatest problems facing basic education is inadequate funding.
