CODEINE! Police Arrest Emzor Staff Busted In BBC Report
Madubuike Chukwunonye is a former staff of Emzor Pharmaceutical Industries Limited.
While in the employment of Emzor, he had access to limited quantities of Emzolyn with Codeine for distribution to licensed retail pharmacies under his assigned territory.
On May 1, 2018, Emzor Pharmaceutical reported a case of unlawful distribution of controlled substances in breach of the drugs laws of Nigeria.
It was alleged that due to greed for money, he knowingly supplied these controlled drugs to persons who are not supposed to have access to them in the first-place contrary to the dictates of the drug laws of Nigeria.
The suspect who has been on the run since May 2018 was eventually arrested by the operatives of the Command, attached to Area ‘D’ Headquarters, at Idi Iroko Border town of Ogun State while trying to escape into Cotonou, Benin Republic.
You will recall that the BBC did a broadcast on the activities of the subject, who was caught on camera selling restricted drugs to a BBC undercover investigator named Adejuwon Soyinka a.k.a. Mr. Johnson.
In his statement, he averred that he was only trying to meet his sales target and that the BBC man was introduced to him by one Pascal as a genuine businessman without verifying the former’s identity as a Pharmacist.
He regretted selling controlled substances to unauthorized persons but how about the image of Nigeria which was badly damaged by that investigative report?
The BBC documentary exposed how codeine-based cough syrups were fuelling an addiction epidemic in northern Nigeria.
And the damning revelations led to NAFDAC taking its war against codeine consumption seriously by making Emzor and some other pharmaceutical companies scape goats.
Peace Standard Pharmaceutical ltd. And BIORAJ Pharmaceutical ltd. both in Ilorin, Kwara state both suffered a shutdown with Emzor. Please share the story and WATCH the video below:
