Chaos As Bayelsa Govt. Enforces Sanitation Law
The monthly environmental sanitation exercise which holds on the last Saturday of every month in Bayelsa State came with some drama.
This one was special because it was Easter and the state needed to look its best to celebrate the resurrection of Christ.
But despite the ads by both government and private media about the exercise from Wednesday 28 to the early hours of Saturday, March 31, some people just won’t listen.
The Director of the sanitation authority, Eguruze Presley went on a drive around the Yenagoa metropolis on a raid and it resulted in the arrest of 89 people comprising 56 males, 31 females and two children.
Three tricycles (Keke Napep) were also seized.
The defaulters appeared before the sanitation court and some of them were released on bail ranging between the sum of 5,000 to 10,000 naira.
Some were sentenced to spend 3 to 4 weeks at the Okaka prison while the underage were told to sweep the offices and go home.
Three pastors were also among the Sanitation defaulters.
At Etegwe/Tombia Junction, there was a confrontation between the sanitation team and some policemen who barricaded the road and prevented officials from gaining access.
The confrontation degenerated and one of the policemen raised his gun and shot a bullet in the air.
This sent confusion across the area as spectators and some residents scampered for safety.
One of the male defaulters also fought with the sanitation team during his arrest.
