The man who will be Babajide Sanwoolu’s deputy if he is elected governor of Lagos state is Dr. Femi Hamzat.

Both men served under Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Babatunde Raji Fashola when they were governors of Lagos state from 1999 to 2007 and 2007 to 2015.

Hamzat’s strong desire to be governor of Lagos state is not in doubt as he ran against current governor, Akinwunmi Ambode at the APC primaries in 2015.

He was back again for 2019 and ran against Babajide Sanwoolu during the last primaries before he was convinced to step down for the eventual flagbearer.

He got the deputy governor’s slot for his troubles and he is expected to play a sidekick to a man he believes he is as qualified as.

How safe is it to have such an ambitious man as deputy governor? Would there be no conflict of interest? Should Sanwoolu not be worried about the man?

Mr Sanwoolu is not worried. In fact, he feels that Dr. Hamzat is being unfairly judged by people who do not know him.

“Dr. Hamzat is a fine gentleman, someone I have tremendous respect for. I can call him my friend as we have known each other for over 15 years.

“Of course, he is ambitious. He has aspiration which everyone must have. Today, he is my partner and he’s my deputy by God’s grace and when we’ve been put in the team together, Lagos is getting the price of two for one.

“Each one of us can as well be sitting there but with collaboration, understanding and appreciation of the strengths that each one of us brings to the table, it will be double energy.

“Both of us are not looking behind our shoulders. It’s a team we are building together, and I am sure that he will serve very well as deputy governor while I remain as the governor,” he said.
