CAF CL: Plateau United Suffers First Leg Defeat
Nigeria Professional Football League champions, Plateau United on Tuesday suffered a 4-2 defeat to Tunisian side, Etoile du Sahel, in the first leg, first round CAF Champions League tie.
Played at the Stade Olympique Sousse, the host went four goals up before Plateau United was able to cancel two goals.
Etoile du Sahel started off on the perfect note when Amr Marei got the curtain raiser in the first minute following a perfect pass by Al Khaly Bangoura.
They doubled their lead a minute later through Amine Chermiti who capitalised on poor defending by the visitors to slot the ball into the net. Chermiti increased their lead with a cheeky backheel in the 10th minute to end the first half 3-0 to the delight of home fans.
Etoile slowed down the tempo of their attack in the second half but soon got the fourth in the 54th minute courtesy of Ayman Sfaxi deflected strike.
Afterwards, Plateau United appeared to have woken up from their slumber and were rewarded for their efforts when Rapheal Ayagwa converted from the spot in the 69th minute.
Tosin Omoyele further reduced the deficit seven minutes from time when he netted Plateau United’s second to end the game 4-2.
Plateau United will now need to score two goals and avoid conceding any, in the return leg scheduled for Jos in a fortnight.
