Nigeria could have ended without any silverware at Thursday's Aiteo/CAF Awards but the brilliance of Asisat Oshoala in the period under review saved the day.

It is in that light that the Lagos State governor, Akinwunmi Ambode has congratulated her after winning the African Women Player of the Year for the third time.

Ambode, who was one of the special guests at the glittering ceremony. He tweeted; “Congratulations to all the winners at the Awards, especially our own, Asisat Oshoala who emerged as the Women’s Player of the Year.”

Oshoala has been in top form for her club even though she has been rendered redundant as far as national team duties are concerned.

This is the third time in four years that the former Liverpool and Arsenal Ladies forward is been voted as best on the continent.

She won in 2014, 2016 and 2017.
