Buhari Okays Payment Of Paris Club Refund Balance
Money will fall on workers whose salaries have not been paid for months.
But this depends on what governors will do with funds that are about to hit their state accounts.
State governments in Nigeria will soon draw another set of Paris Club refund even though some states have been accused of not using the earlier payments judiciously.
President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday gave approval for the release of the balance of the Paris Club refund.
He gave the approval at a meeting with the Nigerian Governors Forum at the State House, Abuja.
President Buhari urged the governors to ensure that workers salaries were prioritised.
The Governor's Forum was led by Mr Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara State.
At a press conference after the meeting, Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State, confirmed the President's directive.
Governor Okorocha said the governors agreed that workers’ salaries at the state level would be paid in time for the yuletide.
But he stressed that early payment is subject to when they get alert for the balance of the Paris Club refund.
President Buhari's approval is coming two weeks after some pensioners in Osun State accused the governor of diverting the funds for other projects instead of paying salaries and pensions.
They asked President Buhari not to release the new tranche of Paris Club loan refund meant for the payment of retirees to Governor Aregbesola.
At the last meeting with the Governors, President Buhari had wondered how the Governors sleep at night when workers have not been paid their wages.
