Nigeria's President, Muhammadu Buhari, has sent a congratulatory message to German Chancellor Angela Merkel on her victory at the polls.

Mrs Merkel was elected for the fourth time as German Chancellor, in what has been described as worst election for her party and coalitions.

In a statement by his spokesman, Femi Adesina, the President felicitated with the German Chancellor’s party for producing leadership for the country for over 12 years and winning another opportunity to sustain the legacy of good work.

"The President recalls his interactions with Chancellor Merkel over the years, especially at the G8 meeting in 2015 and during his visit to Germany in 2016, coming away with a strong impression of her commitment to building stronger ties across the world," the statement read.

"President Buhari wishes the German Chancellor a successful tenure," the statement read.

The Nigerian leader had at the UN General Assembly highlighted the role Mrs Merkel played in giving hope to thousand of refugees that had trooped into Europe.

He said: "In particular, we must collectively thank the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany under the commendable leadership of Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Governments of Italy, Greece and Turkey for assisting hundreds of thousands of refugees".

Merkel's fourth re-election came with some concerns for the party, as opposition appeared to be gaining ground.
