Buhari Begs World Bank, Bill Gates To Provide Nigerians Health Insurance
Have you heard of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) before? It is an insurance scheme for all Nigerian workers, funded by the government.
Now, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo is saying that the Buhari’s government no longer has enough money to keep paying for this health insurance.
He then said that the government is begging the World Bank and billionaire Bill Gates, through his Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to help them with some money to sustain the insurance scheme.
This was part of what Osinbajo said at a forum in Minneapolis, the United States, which was attended by Nigerians, according to a statement.
Osinbajo said: “On improving the health budget at the state and federal levels, the focus is on trying to do the National Health Insurance because funding healthcare through budgeting has proved to be practically impossible. We simply do not have the resources; the states and the Federal Government cannot do enough.
"So, the National Health Insurance is a very basic part of it and we are currently working now with the World Bank and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to establish a proper National Health Insurance Scheme".
But you see, it is not as if everyone is covered in the present NHIS scheme. In fact, less than seven million out of over 190 million people in the country are covered by the NHIS and most of the enrollees are the Federal Government workers, according to the NHIS.
