Reports broke out of China on Monady, where the former Newcastle star is playing for Beijing Enterprises, that he had been taken ill after training.

The Ivory Coast international joined Chinese Super League side Beijing Enterprises in January having spent seven years at St James’s Park.

He made 52 international appearances for Ivory Coast where he scored one goal, against Nigeria in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The 30-year-old was reported to have collapsed at the training ground and taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Beijing Enterprises are yet to make a statement on Tiote’s health.

But a spokesman for the player has announced his death.

Emanuele Palladino said: "It is with deep sadness that I confirm that my client Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training with his club Beijing Enterprises.

"We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family's privacy be respected at this difficult time.

"We ask for all your prayers."

Tiote will always be remembered for the screamer he scored against Arsenal.
