Boxing: More Nigerians Qualify For Quarter Finals At African Championships
Two more Nigerian male boxers Owolabi Lawal and Richard Egowa have both secured qualification into the quarter-finals of the 2017 African Boxing Championships (World Boxing Championships qualifiers) in Congo Brazzaville
Lawal fought his way into the last eight after recording victory win over Manuel Gomes of Angola in the men's lightweight category.
On his part, Egowa knocked out Uganda's Regarn Simbwa in round two of their contest to progress in the men's light heavyweight category.
Before these latest set of qualifiers, on Monday, Osita Umeh (men's welterweight) and Yetunde Odunuga (women's lightweight) qualified for the quarter-finals and semi-finals respectively.
The only two Nigerian boxers who have crashed out of the championships are men's heavyweight boxer, Godwin Ambrose, and 2015 All Africa Games silver medal winner Caroline Linus who fought in the women's flyweight.
The ongoing African Boxing Championships doubles as a direct qualification route for the men to the 2017 AIBA World Championships, billed for Berlin, Germany from August 25 to September 3.
Quota places will be awarded to the four top athletes in each of the ten weight categories.
