#BounceExclusive: Dump Site Causes Cholera Outbreak In Gombe
“Please help me. My house has been turned to a waste dumping site.
“I have tried all I could to stop them from dumping their wastes on the front and back side of my house but no one seems to pay attention to my plea”.
Aishatu Adamu lamented as Bounce News correspondent approached her.
The 75-year-old mother of four children said she wanted the attention of those saddled with responsibility of keeping Gombe clean and green.
She wants relevant authorities to resolve the problem that is causing trouble for her family.
No fewer than 15 people have been treated of Cholera in the last 2 months in Yalwan Bogo community of Akko local government.
The outbreak was said to be as a result of refuse scattered on a major street in the community.
The waste dumped on the street has forced motorist and members of the community to stop using the street.
Aishatu added that both the rich and poor in the community are taking advantage of her old age and her being a widow to turn her home to a waste dumping site.
According to hospital records in the community, apart from taken over the major street of the area, the scattered waste has caused health hazard issues with more than 15 being treated for cholera.
Isah Adamu, chairman of Yalwan Bogo Community Development Association told Bounce News that the association had made several attempts to stop further dumping of trash on the street, but the lack of waste bins has always been the challenge.
But now that the community members have started fallen sick, the only option left is to enforce everybody to look for ways to manage his or her waste, Isah Adamu said.
“Our people here are ignorant of the effect of such things; can you image a man emptied his filled soakaway and he wanted to dispose the waste in the community not minding the epidemic this action could cause.
“We have notified the appropriate authorities to take action,” he said.
