The controversy over who flies the governorship flag of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State in the 2019 general elections has been finally laid to rest.

Party leaders have endorsed Governor Akinwunmi Ambode as the party’s sole candidate for the governorship election.

Ambode will on Monday, September 10 (today), pick the party’s forms to seek re-election for a second term in office.

In the last couple of months, the issue of whether Ambode will contest a second term has dominated discussions in Lagos.

The anxiety was heightened few days ago during the stakeholders meeting of the party chaired by national leader of the party,  Bola Tinubu, at the party’s Lagos secretariat on Acme Road, Ikeja.

Tinubu had told party members that there was no automatic ticket for anybody including the governor.

However, Tinubu’s resolve to endorse Ambode was made possible with the interventions of Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo and the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, both of whom the governor allegedly asked to wade into the situation that hitherto threatened his re-election in 2019.

An authoritative source confirmed the development to Bounce News at the weekend, noting that the two eminent Nigerians approached Tinubu at different times and prevailed on him to reconsider his stand on Ambode’s re-election, considering the larger implications.

The source noted that the APC leader yielded to the intervention of the Vice President and the monarch out of respect for the two leaders.

This development regardless, party leaders in the state are stilll believed to be angry with the governor over alleged lack of respect and poor treatment of the people, who made it possible for him to become governor in the first place.

Tinubu

Another source hinted that one of the problems the governor had with Tinubu and many of the political leaders in the state was, because he wasn’t consulting on critical issues of state and had at a point, alienated everyone in the political class in the running of the state.

The source said although Tinubu was displeased with the running of the government, he did not have any fundamental differences with the governor, the reason he yielded to the pleas to let Ambode return.

Ambode will be the sole candidate of the party in the election.

“As I speak, there is no contender for APC governorship primary with Ambode.“Nobody is coming out. The governor is the only person that is contesting.

"To the best of my knowledge, I don’t think anybody from the party is coming to challenge him. That will be difficult,” the source added.

Ambode is also not expected to face a serious rival from other parties in the election.

The APC, which metamorphosed from the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) has run the state since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

The endorsement has finally put an end to the ambition of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. The PDP had been hoping to capitalise on the rumoured crisis between Ambode and Tinubu to win the governorship election.

It is pertinent to state that the immediate Lagos State governor and Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, went through similar re-election baptism with Tinubu, but many people in the state rose early in support and defence of Fashola, which forced Tinubu to yield and eventually endorse him.
