#BounceExclusive: Alimosho LG Officials Defy Gov. Ambode’s Ban, Exploit Motorists
Uchechukwu was driving out of a shopping complex near the Akowonjo roundabout, close to the Alimosho Local Government Secretariat.
He was about navigating the bend when some members of the Local Government Task Force jumped in front of his car and stopped him.
Uchechukwu was obviously in shock as he did not understand what was going on.
The officials, who were on mufti, asked him to alight and told him that he drove through ‘one way’, a claim that did not go down well with Uchechukwu.
He was asked to come out of the car while one of the officials jumped in and drove it off to the secretariat where he was asked to pay a N50,000 fine or his car would be impounded.
The explanation he tried to give fell on deaf ears as he was escorted into the secretariat where he parted with some cash.
Uche’s experience is what most motorists plying that axis go through on a daily basis.
Most of the motorists who spoke with Bounce News complained about the activities of the council officials.
They said the officials are constituting nuisance on the road and need to be called to order.
A motorist identified as Reuben shared a similar experience saying the local council officials now serve as law enforcement agents like the police and LASTMA.
"I know of instances where they impounded cars parked on the road despite being banned by the state government."
The state governor Akinwunmi Ambode had ordered the ban of all Local Government officials in the state from controlling or engaging in traffic duties.
Acting Commissioner for Transportation, Anofiu Elegushi said in recent times, that there had been complaints about the role of Local Government and Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs in traffic enforcent.
“Indeed, there are traffic units in all the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas. However, this is not a responsibility for the third tier of government.
“We have reported instances of illegal arrest, extortion and general impunity on the part of the Local Government operatives.
“It is then appropriate to disband all the units and outfits parading as Local Government Traffic Units. This has been communicated to all these Agencies. For the avoidance of doubt, officials of the Ministry will start monitoring and any infraction will be dealt with in full compliance with the Law.”
