At least three persons have lost their lives while scores were wounded, following a tanker fire accident that occurred early Tuesday, December 25th at the Rumuola junction, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Property whose value could not be ascertained were destroyed in the incident after the tanker, which was loaded with petroleum products, fell and exploded.

Bounce News gathered the incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday when the tanker, suspected to be carrying illegally bunkered petroleum products crashed, spilling its content into a nearby canal.

It was further gathered that a spark occurred immediately after the incident resulting in a large inferno that took over the canal, thereby killing three persons and razing all the buildings close to the canal.

An eyewitness told our correspondent that the tanker overturned following brake failure.

He said the petroleum products spilled from Rumuola area to Rumukalagbor, where the inferno started.

When contacted, the Rivers State Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, Damiete Herbert Miller, confirmed the ugly development.

Herbert-Miller said the driver of the ill-fated tanker managed to escape with the tanker’s truck-head and has been on the run since after the explosion.

He commiserated with families of the deceased and victims of the tanker fire incident, adding that the state government will reach out to the deceased families.

Meanwhile, some of the people whose property were destroyed have called on the state government to come to their aid.

They urged relevant agencies to caution tanker drivers against reckless driving, advising that trucks conveying petroleum products should be checked before hitting the roads.
