Documents shown by the world football governing body, FIFA has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo was not the preferred candidate of Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel for the FIFA Men's Player of the Year Award.

Voting for the player and coach categories was by national team captains and managers, selected journalists and, for the first time, an online poll of fans.

Each accounted for 25% of the total.

Mikel and the Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr both picked Barcelona and Argentina talisman Lionel Messi over the charismatic Real Madrid forward Ronaldo.

However, both differed on their choice for the Best coach.

While Rohr voted eventual winner, Zinedine Zidane, Mikel went for his former manager at Chelsea, Antonio Conte.

That perhaps shows that he had no grudges against the Italian manager who never gave him any chance in his last days at Chelsea, a development which culminated in his move to China.
