The projected medal count for Team Nigeria at the ongoing African Senior Athletics Championships in Asaba Delta State has been dealt a great blow.

This follows the unexpected pulling out of Blessing Okagbare from the 100m and 200m Women events.

Okagbare who is the Nigerian record holder in both events cited injury as her reason for pulling out, while also tendering an unreserved apology to the fans and Nigerians who had been eager to see her in action in Asaba

She said, “For me, the 100 and 200 meters are rounds and my body cannot really handle certain things. It’s not my call; it was a call from my team. Sometimes; I have to forget about Blessing and everything she wants and listen to the advice given and that was what happened today (Wednesday, August 1st)”.

But it is not all gloom yet as the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games bronze medallist revealed that she may likely participate in the 4x100 relay event.

“Hopefully if the relay 4 by 100 meters is like a final, I can handle like one race which is easier for me to do but when it goes round; it takes a lot of work for me to get back on each round due to injury”, she said.
