Asaba 2018: Oduduru Loses Dad Days Before Winning Medals For Nigeria
When Divine Oduduru was training on the Stephen Keshi Stadium tracks alongside Blessing Okagbare on Monday morning July 30, ahead of the African Senior Athletics Championship, he did not know that he was already bereaved.
The news was kept away from him by family members so as to allow him concentrate on the game.
He went on to compete for Nigeria and won two medals, even if he had the feelings something was not right.
Oduduru won silver in the 200m with a time of 20.60s as he fended off bronze medallist Luxolo Adams of South Africa (20.60s).
After coming second in the Men’s 200m final, Nigeria came third in the Men’s 4×100m relay final where the 21-year-old was part of the quartet that won a silver medal.
“I had the feeling when it happened. If something like that happens to me I used to feel somehow, that was the reason I was a bit dull in some of my events.” He told Bounce News on Monday, the day after Asaba 2018 ended.
Pa Oduduru was 80-years-old before his departure from this world, but Divine, the last child of the family, is still pained by the demise.
“That is why I am still in Asaba, I plan to go to Ughelli where the incident happened before traveling abroad.
“I have to take a walk around so that I will not think too much. I have cried and cried and cried. I will really miss him”
Divine is a five-time African Junior Champion and was the 2014 World Junior Silver Medallist in the 200 metres.
During the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel’s dad was kidnapped by armed men back in Nigeria. And while the player knew about it before the game against Argentina, he went on to give his best and ensure the 2013 Africa champion put up a fight.
However, Nigeria lost the tie 2-1 to Argentina, no thanks to a late minute Marcos Rojo goal after Odion Ighalo had missed a seater.
