It was a good day for Team Nigeria at the 2018 African Senior Athletics Championship as they got onto the medals podium with pride.

Four medals were won on Thursday, Day 2, as the West African nation dominated in most of the events of the day.

First, it was Tobi Amusan who got the country rolling as she easily cruised to top finish and claimed gold medal in the women’s 100m hurdles.

To the delight of cheering fans inside the Stephen Keshi stadium in Asaba, Tobi came first in the 100m women’s hurdles on Thursday afternoon at a time of 12.86 seconds, with South Africa’s Rikenette Steenkamp coming second.

Enekwechi Chukwuebuka won Nigeria’s second gold of the day, in men's shot put, beating Egypt’s Mohamed Khalifa and third place finisher, Kyle Blignaut.

The two gold was followed by a silver medal which came from Ogunrinde Temilola in the women’s hammer throw event.

Morocco’s Zakour Soukania won the gold in that category, while Congo’s Jennifer Batu Bawsikita came third to win the bronze medal.

Joy Udo-Gabriel added to Nigeria’s medal haul, winning bronze in the women’s 100m event.

She came behind her major threat, Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josée Ta Lou who won the women’s 100m, and Janet Amponsah of Ghana, who finished second.

Ta Lou came first with a time of 11.15 seconds, while Janet and Joy finished at 11.54 seconds and 11.58 seconds respectively.

However, Nigeria’s Ntia-Obong Mercy failed to get to the medal’s range despite making it to the final as she finished 5th in the women’s 100m.

Grace Ayemoba also made it to the 100m hurdles women’s final but was unlucky to win a medal, finishing 4th.

Same fate goes for Seye Ogunlewe, who finished a distant 5th in the men’s 100m with a time of 10.45. The event was won by South Africa’s Akani Simbine at a time of 10.25 seconds, while Gueu Arthur Cisse of Ivory Coast and Simon Magakwe of South Africa came 3rd in the category.

Olowora Aminat finished 8th in the women’s 5000m event, with Kenya’s Helen Obori snatching gold in that category. Ethiopia’s duo of Senbere Sora and Meskerem Hayile finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
