South Africa thought they were cruising to a 3rd back-to-back victory of the African Senior Athletics Championship until Kenya showed up on the final day in Asaba.

South Africa was topping the medals table from Day 2, and in the morning of the final day, they were the favourites to do a hat-trick after winning the African Athletics Championship in 2014 in Morocco, and retaining the title when they hosted it in 2016.

But with long distance races finals scheduled for the final day, and most Kenyan athletes qualifying from their heats, the East Africans were primed for more medals.

Alphas Leken Kishoyian led the Kenyans to claim maximum gold inside a jampacked Stephen Keshi Stadium.

That feat was achieved as they upstage host Nigeria and South Africa to win a total of 11 gold, six silver and two bronze medals.

South Africa won nine gold, 13 silver and eight bronze medals, while host Nigeria came 3rd with nine gold, five silver and five bronze medals.

Morocco and Ethiopia complete the list of the top five teams with two gold, three silver and four bronze medals; and two gold, two silver and four bronze medals respectively.
